Ghanaian singer and music producer Bismark Enyan, popularly known as Abochi, has opened up about how his hit song Bestie unexpectedly became the catalyst for a real-life love story with his female best friend.

The musician made the revelation during an interview with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, where he shared that the emotional track, which was inspired by his personal experiences, eventually encouraged the woman at the centre of the story to confess that she felt the same way about him.

Released in 2019, Bestie quickly became one of Abochi’s most successful songs, earning widespread praise from music lovers in Ghana and beyond. The heartfelt record tells the story of a young man who develops romantic feelings for his female best friend but struggles to express them because he fears losing the friendship they have built over the years. The song struck a chord with many listeners who had experienced similar situations, making it one of the most relatable love songs of its time.

Unknown to many fans, the story behind the lyrics was more fact than fiction.

According to Abochi, after listening to the song, his female best friend reached out to him to find out whether the emotions expressed in the lyrics were genuinely about her.

Recalling the memorable conversation, he said she asked him, “Is that how you really feel about me?” When he confirmed his feelings, she surprised him with a response he had not anticipated.

“She was like, ‘Oh, I feel the same way,'” he recounted.

That heartfelt exchange marked the beginning of a romantic relationship between the two friends. What had started as a close friendship gradually blossomed into love, giving Abochi the opportunity to live out the very story he had captured in his music.

However, their love story did not last as long as either of them may have hoped.

The singer disclosed that after dating for about six months, they both realised that they were better off remaining friends than pursuing a romantic relationship.

“After that we dated, we entered into a relationship, but after six months it didn’t work. We realised we were better as friends,” he explained.

Although the relationship came to an end, Abochi’s experience serves as a reminder that not every friendship is meant to become a lasting romance. Sometimes, taking that leap answers the lingering question of “what if,” even if the journey ultimately leads back to friendship.

For many fans who have connected with Bestie over the years, Abochi’s revelation adds an even deeper layer of authenticity to the song. It confirms that the emotions woven into the lyrics were not simply the product of creative songwriting, but reflections of a deeply personal chapter in the artist’s life.
