Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has sparked conversation among music fans after declaring Janet Jackson, rather than her late brother Michael Jackson, the true “King of Pop.”

Speaking to Pitchfork about the albums that have influenced her artistry, the “Sad Girlz Luv Money” hitmaker singled out Janet Jackson’s acclaimed 1997 album, The Velvet Rope, as the standout release in the singer’s catalogue.

“Every Janet Jackson album is fantastic. But The Velvet Rope is the best,” Amaarae said. “If I were conscious in 1997 when the album dropped, I would have played it nonstop. It’s so vulnerable, sexy, aggressive and experimental.”

The singer then offered her assessment of Janet Jackson’s place in pop music history.

“Janet, to me, is the real king of pop. No shade to Michael Jackson,” she stated.

Released in 1997, The Velvet Rope is widely regarded as one of Janet Jackson’s most influential and daring projects. The album tackled themes of identity, sexuality, relationships and mental health, earning critical acclaim and continuing to inspire artists across generations.

Amaarae’s comments are likely to reignite discussions about the Jackson family’s legacy and Janet’s enduring impact on contemporary pop music.
