Being the mother of a global superstar comes with its perks, but apparently, it also comes with occasional phone confiscation duties.
Bose Ogulu, the mother and manager of Nigerian Afrobeats heavyweight Burna Boy, has revealed that she sometimes has to take matters into her own hands when her son gets a little too carried away during his Instagram Live sessions.
Ogulu made the revelation during an interview with media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Channels TV, where she opened up about Burna Boy’s personality, his outspoken nature and the challenges that come with managing an artist who is never afraid to speak his mind.
According to Ogulu, trying to completely change Burna Boy would be a mistake. Instead, she has learned to give him room to be himself while stepping in when necessary.
“You can always notice the difference between when I tweet and when Burna tweets,” she explained.
She compared artists like her son to a tapestry, warning that pulling too hard on one thread could cause the entire thing to unravel.
Her point was simple: the same fiery personality that occasionally gets Burna Boy into trouble is also part of what makes fans love him.
“So, you must make allowances for this person being himself, because it’s the same emotion that what you love about him comes from,” she said.
But while Ogulu is willing to give her son creative and personal freedom, apparently there is still a line.
And when Burna Boy crosses it during an Instagram Live, Mum knows exactly what to do.
“I usually grab his phone from him anytime he goes wild on Instagram Live,” she revealed.
That confession offers a rather amusing glimpse into the relationship between one of Africa’s biggest music stars and the woman who has helped steer his career.
Burna Boy has built a reputation for being outspoken, unpredictable and unapologetically himself on social media. His Instagram Live sessions have occasionally become headline material because of his comments, reactions and interactions with fans.
For Ogulu, however, those moments are not necessarily signs that something is wrong. They are part of the personality that helped create Burna Boy in the first place.
The challenge, therefore, is not to silence him completely, but to know when Mum needs to make a quick executive decision.
Sometimes, managing an international superstar apparently means managing his music, his career and, every now and then, his phone.
