Ghanaian musician KiDi has opened up about the challenges he faced after discovering that he was going to become a father while still a university student.

Speaking on the Konnected Minds Podcast, the singer recalled feeling frightened and overwhelmed by the news, saying he was still trying to understand himself and determine his direction in life at the time.

“I was scared. I was in uni. I was scared. I was shaken,” he recalled.

KiDi explained that the unexpected responsibility had a significant impact on his academic life. He revealed that the emotional pressure contributed to difficulties with his studies, eventually resulting in him having to sit resit examinations.

“It did affect my education because I had resits. It was a thing that was heavy on my thoughts. I wasn’t even KiDi then. I was trying to figure out what my sound was going to be,” he said.

The musician said the prospect of raising a child while he was still trying to establish himself personally and professionally was particularly daunting.

“So how to raise a child? I was still even raising myself. I was still trying to figure out my place in the world. So to come and add another human to that equation was such a scary concept,” he explained.

Despite the challenges, KiDi credited his family, particularly his mother, with providing the support and encouragement he needed to navigate the difficult period.

He said his family’s presence gave him confidence that he could overcome the situation, regardless of how difficult it became.

“One thing that kept me going was I always find a way. No matter how difficult it was. I knew I had my family. I knew I had those people behind me. My mom was always going to show up for me,” he stated.

According to the singer, the support also motivated him to complete his education despite the setbacks.

“It helped me to finish my education. I even took some vim to go and write my resits,” he added.

KiDi further disclosed that although he knew about the pregnancy early, he was unable to accompany the child’s mother to antenatal appointments because they were living in different countries at the time.

“I wasn’t able to be there until he was actually born because we were in different countries,” he revealed.

The musician’s account offers a glimpse into a challenging chapter of his life, when he was simultaneously navigating university, developing his musical identity and adjusting to the unexpected responsibilities of fatherhood.
