Celebrated Ghanaian highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has revealed that a chance encounter with dancehall star Stonebwoy on a flight played a key role in bringing the much-anticipated remix of his classic song, “Odo Nwom,” to life.
According to the highlife veteran, he had been considering a remix of the song for about two years before eventually re-recording it and beginning the search for an artiste to feature on the new version.
The project took an unexpected turn when Ofori Amponsah met Stonebwoy during a flight and mentioned the remix to him.
He said Stonebwoy immediately expressed his admiration for the original song and asked to be included on the remix.
“We met Stonebwoy, and we were talking about the song. And he said, ‘Ah Charlie, this song is a song that I like.’ I said, I’m remixing it. And he said, ‘Then give it to me,’” Ofori Amponsah recounted in an interview with Kafui Dey shared on X.
Ofori Amponsah disclosed that he had already sent the song to contemporary Ghanaian musician KiDi before his unexpected meeting with Stonebwoy.
After Stonebwoy recorded his contribution, KiDi also added his vocals to the project, a development Ofori Amponsah described as almost “divine.”
“So I had sent the song to KiDi already. And so after Stone recorded his part, KiDi also did it. And it was just like, it was kind of divine.”
The veteran musician also admitted that he did not anticipate the level of attention the remix would receive.
According to him, he approached the project without expecting it to become a major talking point, making the song’s reception a pleasant surprise.
“I just consider myself a musician. I just create a song. What people call it, I don’t care. The song is doing well. I’m surprised at the reception of the song because I thought we were just joking with it, but it’s making waves.”
The “Odo Nwom” remix brings together three generations and distinct sounds within Ghanaian popular music. Ofori Amponsah contributes the classic highlife foundation, Stonebwoy adds his dancehall influence, while KiDi brings a contemporary touch to the beloved song.
The collaboration has consequently introduced the classic record to a new generation of listeners while retaining the nostalgic appeal that made the original a memorable highlife song.
