Highlife musician Akwaboah has sparked a heated discussion on social media after advising couples to prioritise financial preparation by saving GH¢8,000 every month before getting married.
The singer shared the advice in a post on X, stating:
“Learn to save 8,000 cedis from your salary every month. Save before you marry. I go come explain soon.”
The comment quickly attracted widespread reactions, with many Ghanaians questioning whether the recommendation reflects the financial realities of the average worker.
Some social media users argued that the advice raises practical concerns, particularly because many workers earn far less than the amount suggested as monthly savings. Others asked how realistic it is for someone to save GH¢8,000 after covering essential expenses such as rent, transportation, food and family responsibilities.
One user questioned:
“How much is the salary itself? And now you’re talking about saving GH¢8,000 from it?”
Another asked for further clarification, suggesting that the recommendation may only apply to a small section of society with higher incomes.
However, some people supported Akwaboah’s message, arguing that financial readiness is an important factor before marriage. They noted that while the exact amount may not be achievable for everyone, couples should develop a habit of saving and avoid entering marriage without proper planning.
