Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has praised The Eyes of Ghana, the documentary spotlighting the extraordinary life and historical footage of Chris Hesse, the personal cameraman of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The rapper described the documentary as riveting, drawing attention to a project that brings an important chapter of Ghana’s history into sharper focus.

The Eyes of Ghana follows Hesse, who documented key moments during Nkrumah’s leadership and preserved footage that offers a rare visual record of Ghana’s early post-independence years.

Hesse’s archive is central to the documentary’s story. The film explores how footage captured during that period survived political upheaval and how the veteran cinematographer eventually brought the historic material back into public view.

The project was directed by Ben Proudfoot and produced by Higher Ground Productions, the production company founded by former United States President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, alongside popular internet streamer IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr.

The documentary premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and brings renewed attention to the people behind the camera who helped preserve Ghana’s political and cultural history.

M.anifest’s praise adds another prominent Ghanaian voice to conversations surrounding the film and its significance. Beyond its cinematic appeal, The Eyes of Ghana offers an opportunity for audiences, particularly younger generations, to engage with archival material documenting the country’s journey through a defining period of its history.

As interest in Ghanaian history continues to find new audiences, the documentary highlights the enduring value of preserving historical records and telling stories through the eyes of those who witnessed them.
