Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has revealed plans to return to signing and developing artistes, announcing that a new label partnership is underway as he prepares to revive full-scale talent management.
Speaking in an interview with BTM Africa, the rapper explained that although he stepped away from managing artistes in recent years, his passion for discovering and nurturing talent has inspired him to re-enter the space.
Sarkodie admitted that managing artistes in Ghana comes with enormous responsibility, often extending far beyond music and business.
“When you sign an artiste, you’re technically almost responsible for their life. It’s not supposed to be that, but that’s what it is, especially where we are from in Ghana. It’s difficult because you want the best for the artiste. And when people have someone to blame, everything that happens in their personal life has to be you,” he said.
The award-winning musician noted that the demands of overseeing an artiste’s career, while also navigating public expectations, influenced his decision to pause signing new talent.
However, he said the satisfaction of helping young musicians realise their potential has motivated him to make a comeback.
“I get fulfilled when I’m able to see something and bring it to light. So signing artistes, I moved away from it because of how fully I have to be involved. But we just entered into a new partnership, and we’re about to start a full label service again, like how we did with Sarkcess Music,” he revealed.
According to Sarkodie, preparations are already underway to identify and sign promising artistes under the new venture.
While confirming that he has shortlisted a number of potential signees, the rapper said he would not disclose their identities until contractual and business arrangements have been finalised.
“Yes, we’re still looking for talent. I have my eyes on a few, but I’m not going to mention them until we’re able to get them involved and then have the business side sorted. So yes, I’m coming back fully to have artistes and then invest in them and get them to wherever they have to get to,” he added.
Sarkodie’s announcement marks a new chapter in his contribution to Ghana’s music industry, with expectations that the new label initiative will provide emerging artistes with the mentorship, investment and professional support needed to compete on both local and international stages.
The rapper previously built Sarkcess Music into one of Ghana’s most recognised record labels, helping to develop several artistes while establishing himself as one of Africa’s most influential hip-hop musicians.
