Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Obaapa Christy has criticised individuals who condemn women and gospel artistes for wearing makeup, arguing that many of the practice’s strongest critics have now embraced it themselves.
Speaking in an interview about public perceptions of gospel musicians and personal appearance, the Hyebre Sesafo hitmaker weighed in on the long-running debate within Christian circles over whether cosmetics and beauty enhancements are compatible with the Christian faith.
According to Obaapa Christy, many people who once labelled makeup as inappropriate or sinful have since changed their views and now regularly use it.
“The biggest critics of makeup back then are now the ones addicted to it. People often condemn things simply because they do not have access to them or cannot afford them,” she said.
The award-winning gospel singer urged Christians and the general public to avoid judging people based on their appearance, stressing that outward presentation should not be used as a measure of one’s spirituality.
She further advised against criticising others for their lifestyle choices or personal grooming, suggesting that some criticisms are driven more by circumstance than conviction.
“Don’t attack what you can’t afford. When people don’t have the means to do something, they tend to criticize those who do. But once they get the chance or the resources, you see them doing the exact same thing,” she added.
Obaapa Christy maintained that taking pride in one’s appearance, including wearing makeup and dressing neatly, is part of presenting oneself professionally, particularly as a public figure.
She stressed that looking presentable does not diminish a person’s relationship with God or undermine their Christian values.
Her remarks add to ongoing discussions within Ghana’s gospel music industry about personal appearance, fashion and the evolving expectations placed on gospel artistes by sections of the Christian community.
