Before KiDi was filling dance floors, topping charts and collecting awards across West Africa, he was apparently busy earning himself a very different reputation at home.
The award-winning singer recently took a trip down memory lane during a conversation with Kafui Dey, revealing that his mischievous era started remarkably early. At just five years old, KiDi was already operating like a tiny agent of destruction, leaving his parents wondering what exactly they had brought into the world.
According to the “Sugar” hitmaker, his brand-new school shoes rarely survived their intended purpose. Instead of keeping them clean and presentable, young KiDi would happily use them to kick gravel. By the time he got home, his appearance suggested he had spent the afternoon fighting for his life against a gang of wild animals.
But the incident that reportedly pushed his father to the edge involved something far more serious than battered shoes. It involved food.
One day, after school, KiDi was waiting around when his teacher asked him to pick up something from her desk. Unfortunately, the five-year-old appears to have developed selective hearing long before he became a music star.
Instead of hearing what his teacher actually said, KiDi apparently heard something much more appealing to his stomach. He concluded that she was offering him her lunch and proceeded to attack her waakye with the confidence of a child who believed the meal had his name written all over it.
His father was understandably unimpressed when he heard about the unexpected lunch arrangement.
The punishment was dramatic. KiDi’s sister was instructed to strip him down, leaving the young boy wearing nothing but a pair of formal church shoes. He was then sent outside, with his father essentially declaring that if he wanted to behave like a notorious little troublemaker, he could go and live that life elsewhere.
The exile, however, did not last long.
After bursting into tears by the roadside, the young KiDi was called back home. His father used the moment to teach him a lesson about the importance of family and the consequences of his actions.
But did the experience transform him into a perfectly behaved child?
Absolutely not.
KiDi reportedly admitted that the tough-love strategy failed spectacularly. The punishment may have sent him outside for a few minutes, but it clearly did not evict the mischief from his personality.
Thankfully, that troublesome energy eventually found a more productive outlet. Instead of kicking gravel and stealing waakye, KiDi grew up to kick off hit songs, win awards and become one of Ghana’s most celebrated musical talents.
From notorious five-year-old to music superstar, it appears KiDi has always known how to make an entrance.
