Ghanaian Afropop star KiDi has lifted the curtain on the unexpected story behind his hit collaboration, Liquor, with dancehall heavyweight Stonebwoy.
Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, KiDi revealed that the collaboration almost took a completely different route. He had prepared several songs and visited Stonebwoy at his home, hoping to convince him to jump on another track he personally had his eyes on.
Then Liquor entered the conversation, and Stonebwoy apparently needed no further convincing.
According to KiDi, the dancehall star heard the song and immediately claimed it. Any plans to audition the remaining tracks were quickly cancelled because Stonebwoy had already made up his mind.
The dancehall heavyweight went straight to work and recorded his verse on the spot. But apparently, first drafts do not always survive the Stonebwoy quality-control department.
Later that same night, Stonebwoy called KiDi and asked him not to finalize the song just yet. The following day, he returned with a completely revamped verse that KiDi described as “absolute fire.”
And just like that, Liquor found its final ingredient.
KiDi also opened up about another interesting part of his creative life: the secret vault where he keeps songs he once believed could become global hits.
The singer admitted that he has a collection of unreleased records that were temporarily pushed aside whenever newer projects demanded his attention. But unlike songs that disappear forever into the musical wilderness, KiDi occasionally returns to his old material with fresh ears to see whether the magic is still there.
Sometimes, apparently, the magic is very much alive.
KiDi confirmed that at least one of those forgotten gems has recently been rescued from the vault and selected for his upcoming album.
So while fans wait for the new project, it appears KiDi is not only creating new music. He is also digging through his own musical archives, because sometimes the next big hit has been sitting quietly in the vault all along.
