Ghanaian musician Twitch 4eva has joined the growing chorus of artists raising questions about royalty payments in Ghana, revealing that he has never received money from the country’s music rights collection system.
Speaking during a livestream interview with Made in Ghana, Twitch was confronted with reports that he had allegedly received a whopping $10,000 in royalties from Ghana’s music royalty system.
His reaction was priceless.
Instead of celebrating the supposed windfall, Twitch sarcastically challenged the host to show him where the money was hiding. According to the musician, he has never received any payment from the Ghana Music Rights Organization, commonly known as GHAMRO.
Twitch went even further, admitting that he was not even certain whether there was any money sitting somewhere in his name waiting to be collected.
So much for the alleged $10,000 jackpot.
When asked about the biggest amount he has ever made from music, the singer struggled to point to one eye watering figure. He explained that his earnings have generally arrived in smaller portions rather than one massive payment that would make him reach for the champagne.
His comments have once again brought attention to the long running conversation surrounding music royalties in Ghana, particularly concerns from artists about how revenue generated from their creative works is collected, distributed and accounted for.
For Twitch 4eva, however, the question remains painfully simple: if the royalties are being collected, where exactly is his share?
Until that mystery is solved, the supposed $10,000 appears to exist only in conversation, at least from Twitch’s point of view.
