Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician Akosua Agyapong has opened up about a memorable and challenging moment she experienced at the beginning of her music career, revealing that she once faced pressure to use substances before her first major performance.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, the legendary singer recounted how she was allegedly offered a substance backstage shortly before taking the stage at the Arts Centre for what became one of the biggest performances of her early career.
According to Akosua Agyapong, the show attracted more than 1,000 people and represented a major milestone in her journey as an emerging artiste.
She explained that before the performance, the leader of the instrumental band allegedly brought out a container containing a substance and offered it to members of the group, suggesting it would enhance their confidence and performance.
However, when it got to her turn, the singer said she politely declined, insisting that her natural talent and preparation were enough to deliver a successful performance.
“I told him that, listen, there was a curtain. I said, have you seen the woman sitting there? That’s my mum. I cannot disappoint her. Coming out to perform knowing I’ve had something in me. I didn’t accept it,” she recounted.
Akosua Agyapong explained that she had already gained confidence performing before large audiences during her school days, where she entertained thousands of students, and therefore saw no need to depend on any substance before stepping on stage.
Reflecting on the experience, the highlife icon advised young musicians, actors and other creatives to be cautious of individuals who encourage them to rely on drugs, rituals or other harmful practices in pursuit of success.
She urged emerging talents to trust their abilities, remain disciplined and recognise their gifts as blessings that require hard work and commitment.
According to Akosua Agyapong, genuine success in the creative industry comes through talent, perseverance and dedication rather than shortcuts or external substances.
The celebrated musician remains one of Ghana’s respected highlife voices, known for her contribution to the growth of Ghanaian music and her influence on generations of artistes.
