When your music has travelled far enough to reach diplomatic offices, you know the international agenda is looking slightly different. For Black Sherif, the journey from Ghanaian streets to global stages recently took an interesting turn when the award-winning musician paid a courtesy visit to Germany’s Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshöft.
What was expected to be a formal diplomatic engagement quickly turned into something closer to a meeting between a respected ambassador and one of his favourite artistes.
The German Embassy in Ghana shared photos from the visit and revealed that the encounter was something of a dream come true for Ambassador Landshöft and his family.
Apparently, the Ambassador’s Black Sherif fandom goes back several years. He revealed that he first discovered the Ghanaian star’s music in Berlin in 2022 after listening to the now iconic hit Kwaku the Traveller. The song apparently made such an impression that he declared it his song of the year.
And the fandom did not end there.
As Black Sherif continued releasing hits including Lomo Lomo and IRON BOY, the Ambassador and his family remained tuned in. They even caught the artiste performing live at Zaama Disco, with the experience reportedly serving as a special Christmas treat for the family.
But this was not simply a diplomatic meeting disguised as a fan meet-up.
The two sides reportedly engaged in conversations about music, exploring genres such as rap, highlife and Afrobeats, while also discussing the creative inspiration behind Black Sherif’s latest project, SUN SHERIF.
The conversation also highlighted the interesting Ghana-Germany connection running through Black Sherif’s musical journey.
The German Embassy pointed out that two of the songs that helped establish the artiste’s early momentum, First Sermon and Second Sermon, were produced by Berlin-based German-Ghanaian producer Ghanaian Stallion.
So, technically, the Ghana-Germany relationship was already producing hits long before the diplomatic meeting.
And because no friendly meeting between two competitive personalities should end without someone testing their sporting credentials, Black Sherif and Ambassador Landshöft eventually found themselves facing off over a table tennis game.
The rapper reportedly edged the Ambassador in what appeared to be a closely contested match.
Diplomacy may normally involve handshakes, formal discussions and carefully chosen words, but this meeting came with rap conversations, music history, cultural exchange and a little table tennis rivalry.
The German Embassy ultimately described Black Sherif as humble, thoughtful and deeply reflective, giving fans another glimpse of the personality behind the music.
Who knew international relations could come with a soundtrack and a ping-pong paddle?
