Highlife musician K.K. Fosu has thrown down the political gauntlet once again, insisting he will contest the Akuapem North parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the 2028 general election and is confident of unseating incumbent MP Sammy Awuku.
Speaking on Asempa Showbiz with Adu Kumi, the singer dismissed suggestions that Sammy Awuku’s political pedigree or party backing would stand in his way.
“If Sammy Awuku likes, he should leave the NPP and come to meet me face to face. I am going as an independent candidate,” K.K. Fosu declared.
When the host pointed out that Awuku could enjoy an advantage because he represents the New Patriotic Party, the musician responded with a pointed jab.
“The NPP is even dead. That is what people say,” he remarked.
Sammy Awuku, however, chose humour over hostility in his response. Taking to Facebook, he wrote: “KK Fosu, m’aya da. Please get me a campaign track before you pick the nomination forms. Nice weekend bro.”
The musician’s political ambitions are nothing new. K.K. Fosu first announced plans to contest the Akuapem North seat ahead of the 2024 general election but never filed his nomination. He later explained that a motor accident forced him to abandon the bid.
He also revealed that once he learnt Sammy Awuku would be contesting on the ticket of the NPP, he decided to step aside.
Awuku, a former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, secured the party’s parliamentary nomination in January 2024 before winning the constituency in the December general election. He succeeded Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, who had represented Akuapem North since 2017.
Although his first attempt never made it onto the ballot paper, K.K. Fosu insists his political dream is far from over. With 2028 firmly in his sights, the stage appears set for a contest that could feature campaign speeches, political debates and, perhaps, a soundtrack or two.
