Ghanaian highlife star Samuel Ofori Amponsah has opened up about the personal battles and pressures of fame that pushed him to temporarily leave highlife music for gospel.
The “Otoolege” hitmaker revealed that his decision, which left some fans confused and disappointed, was driven by challenges he was facing privately at the time.
Speaking to Nana Romeo on Atuu on August 22, 2026, Ofori Amponsah said his relationship with God remains an important part of his life, even though he does not necessarily attend church regularly.
“I do pray a lot. Christianity is a relationship with God but not necessarily me going to church. With me, the connection with God is still there,” he said.
The musician explained that he believes maintaining a close relationship with God is more important than simply being a regular churchgoer.
“The way things are among us humans, being close to God is far better and it’s the most important thing that I think we should do,” he added.
Why Ofori Amponsah Left Highlife for Gospel
Looking back on his career, Ofori Amponsah admitted that he has made decisions that disappointed some people, including his choice to temporarily switch from highlife to gospel music.
“One of the disappointments was when I decided to switch from highlife to gospel and people didn’t really understand why,” he explained.
According to the musician, however, there was much more behind the move than fans could see.
He said the pressures that come with fame can become overwhelming, especially when an artiste is dealing with personal struggles away from the spotlight.
“Musicians go through a lot and if you don’t take care, you wouldn’t know what to do with your life because of the pressure of fame,” he said.
Ofori Amponsah revealed that his circumstances at the time forced him to seek God more seriously, describing the decision as one that may have saved his life.
“That time, the things that were happening to me, I had to get closer to God more. If I didn’t take that decision then, I wouldn’t have been alive by now,” he revealed.
He added that there are certain details surrounding that period of his life that he is still not ready to share publicly.
“It’s not everything that I could explain,” he said.
‘Please Forgive Me’
Ofori Amponsah has appealed to fans who felt let down by his move away from highlife to forgive him, insisting that there were personal reasons behind the decision that he could not reveal at the time.
“They should forgive me, but it’s not everything that I could explain,” he said.
Rather than unpacking the entire story during a television interview, the veteran musician says he plans to put everything into a book someday.
He believes the book will help fans understand the struggles, decisions and experiences that shaped his life and career during that difficult period.
“One day, I will write everything in a book so that people will understand. Every decision I took back then had a meaning, so you all should forgive me,” he added.
For now, Ofori Amponsah is leaving the full story for another chapter. And judging by his comments, that chapter may come with a few revelations that could make his highlife-to-gospel journey look very different from what fans thought they knew.
