Rema Gets Heartbreak From Woman He Wanted to Date Seriously: “She Still Wants to Be on the Streets”

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Even Afrobeats superstars are not immune to the dreaded “I’m not ready for a relationship” speech.

Rema may have millions of fans screaming his name, hit songs dominating playlists and a career that has taken him around the world, but when it came to one particular woman, none of that apparently mattered.

The Nigerian superstar has opened up about a recent heartbreak, revealing that a woman he wanted to build a serious relationship with turned down his advances because she was not ready to commit.

Rema made the revelation during a livestream with streamer Okiki, where he explained the personal story behind his latest song, “Oh No.”

According to the singer, he approached the woman because he was genuinely interested in taking the relationship beyond casual dating.

Unfortunately for him, she had other plans.

Rema said the woman made it clear that she was not ready to commit to one person and still wanted to enjoy her life as a single woman.

In Rema’s words, she still wanted to be “on the streets.”

And just like that, the man who has made millions of people fall in love through music found himself starring in his own heartbreak story.

But rather than simply sitting around nursing the emotional damage, Rema did what musicians do best.

He turned the pain into music.

The singer revealed that the experience became the inspiration behind “Oh No,” giving fans a glimpse into the personal emotions behind the track.

“The song was inspired by a lady I wanted a serious relationship with, but she said she still wants to be on the streets,” Rema said.

So while listeners may have been enjoying the song as another Rema record, there was apparently a real-life situation doing the heavy lifting behind the lyrics.

And judging from his comments, the heartbreak also appears to have given the singer an opportunity to reflect on his life more broadly.

Rema said he has been taking time to reassess himself because his journey into fame happened incredibly quickly. He became widely known at just 17, and the pace of his career has continued to accelerate ever since.

Now, at 26, the singer appears to be taking a moment to look back at everything that has happened since his teenage years.

It is a reminder that fame may give you sold-out shows, global recognition and chart-topping records, but it does not come with a VIP pass around heartbreak.

Rema wanted something serious.

She wanted more time on the streets.

He got a broken heart.

Music got a new song.

At least somebody won from the situation.
