When you think about the nightclub, the last thing you probably expect to find is a spiritual awakening. There is usually loud music, flashing lights, packed dance floors and a few decisions people conveniently forget by Sunday morning.
But AratheJay is clearly not following the usual nightclub script.
The Ghanaian musician is taking an entirely different approach with his latest project, Christo Disco EP, a six-track body of work built around one bold idea: taking the message of God beyond the four walls of the church and straight into clubs, streets and everyday spaces.
Speaking on Onua Showtime with Nana Ama McBrown, AratheJay opened up about the inspiration behind the project and made one thing clear. Christo Disco is not an attempt to position himself as a spiritual professor with all the answers.
Instead, the project is deeply personal.
According to the musician, the EP captures his own journey with Christ, from how he accepted his faith to the experiences that have shaped his spiritual life and the lessons he has picked up along the way.
And yes, God gets plenty of airtime.
When McBrown observed that almost every song on the project directly references the Almighty, AratheJay confirmed that it was very much deliberate.
Even when the songs touch on familiar everyday subjects such as making money, chasing opportunities and navigating the hustle, the foundation remains rooted in his faith.
For AratheJay, the idea is not to force religion down people’s throats. It is about meeting people wherever they are and introducing a different kind of message into spaces where gospel music may not traditionally be heard.
His hope is that by taking spiritual music into secular environments, he can create a pathway for people who may have drifted away from their faith to reconnect with it.
Interestingly, this is not some overnight branding strategy cooked up because gospel-themed music suddenly became fashionable.
AratheJay’s spiritual foundation goes all the way back to childhood.
The musician recalled growing up around his grandfather and joining him for early morning street preaching, Bible in hand, while some understandably sleepy neighbours were less than impressed with the early morning sermons.
Those experiences, he explained, played an important role in shaping his faith and the person he has become.
Now, he is taking those childhood experiences and giving them a modern soundtrack.
And if you thought six tracks were enough spiritual ammunition for one project, AratheJay has already loaded another magazine.
The musician revealed that a second instalment of Christo Disco is already in the works, with six more songs expected to arrive soon.
So, while some artists are busy asking listeners to turn up the volume, AratheJay appears to have a slightly different instruction.
Turn up the volume, move your feet and perhaps remember God while you’re at it.
The club just got a little more spiritual.
