Every survivor has a story. For highlife musician Adane Best, that story begins with a goat that unknowingly became an unlikely lifesaver.
Looking back on a terrifying flood that struck his Chorkor neighbourhood more than two decades ago, the musician recounted how a violent rainstorm tore through the area, ripping roofs apart and turning familiar streets into danger zones. As conditions worsened, he decided it was time to leave his room and find safer ground.
Then came an unexpected interruption.
Just as he was about to step outside, a goat darted toward the same exit. Rather than brushing past it, Adane Best instinctively paused and allowed the animal to go first. Seconds later, tragedy struck. The goat stepped into floodwater that had been electrified by a live power source and died instantly.
In that chilling moment, the singer realised the animal had unknowingly shielded him from what could have been a fatal encounter. Had he taken that step first, he believes he would not be alive to tell the tale.
For Adane Best, the incident was far more than a stroke of luck. He sees it as divine intervention, convinced that God used the unsuspecting goat to spare his life during one of Accra’s most devastating flood disasters.
The experience remains etched in his memory, serving as a powerful reminder that life can change in an instant. Sometimes, the difference between life and death is measured not in minutes or metres, but in a single pause and an unexpected four-legged passer-by.
Whether viewed as fate, providence, or an extraordinary coincidence, Adane Best’s remarkable account is proof that survival stories often arrive in the most unexpected forms. In his case, the unlikely hero never uttered a word. It simply bleated, walked ahead, and unknowingly rewrote someone else’s ending.
