Grammy Award-winning Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid has reignited discussions among fans after making comments during his performance at Afro Nation Portugal that many interpreted as a subtle response to comparisons with fellow Grammy winner Burna Boy.

The debate began after Burna Boy headlined the opening day of the festival, with some of his supporters arguing on social media that the organisers selected him as the first-day headliner because of his global appeal and star power.

Wizkid appeared to address the ongoing conversation while performing on the festival’s closing night, telling the audience that his position on the lineup reflected his status.

“Big Wiz is here. This is why you save the best for the last, baby,” he said.

The remark quickly went viral, with fans interpreting it as a response to the online comparisons between the two Afrobeats giants and their respective performance slots at the international music festival.

The comments have since fuelled renewed debates across social media, where supporters of both artistes continue to argue over who holds the top spot in African music.

The latest exchange comes months after reports of a strained relationship between Wizkid and Burna Boy. Their relationship reportedly deteriorated following an incident in Lagos involving Burna Boy and Wizkid’s official disc jockey, DJ Tunez.

Despite the growing rivalry among their fan bases, neither Wizkid nor Burna Boy has publicly confirmed any personal feud in relation to the latest comments.

As two of Africa’s biggest music exports, both artistes continue to dominate global charts, headline major international festivals and play key roles in expanding the global reach of Afrobeats.
