For most people, throwing a party means worrying about the price of drinks, food and perhaps whether there will be enough ice to survive the night. For Stonebwoy, the budget appears to belong in an entirely different tax bracket.
According to media personality and reggae musician Blakk Rasta, the Ghanaian dancehall star spends more than $250,000 on each edition of his BHIM Fest.
Speaking on his show while discussing Stonebwoy’s recent high-profile concert at London’s OVO Arena Wembley, Blakk Rasta offered insight into the eye-watering cost of staging a show at that level.
If his estimate is accurate, Stonebwoy could be spending more than GH¢2.5 million on a single edition of the festival. That is the kind of figure that can make even a calculator request a day off.
And the venue is apparently only one piece of the financial puzzle.
A significant chunk of the budget reportedly goes into bringing international stars to the festival. Stonebwoy has consistently featured major Jamaican artistes, including Spice, Busy Signal, Masicka and Fantan Mojah.
The spending does not reportedly stop at appearance fees. International guests also require accommodation, transportation, meals and hospitality, all of which can quickly turn a concert budget into a financial heavyweight championship.
Blakk Rasta revealed that he was particularly surprised when Fantan Mojah told him how much Stonebwoy paid for his appearance. He suggested that the figure was far beyond what his own Kuchoko Roots Festival could afford.
What makes the story even more intriguing is the reported lack of major corporate backing behind Stonebwoy’s expansion into the United Kingdom.
Reports cited by Pulse Ghana indicate that the musician has largely financed the international expansion of the BHIM Fest concept himself rather than relying heavily on major event organisers or deep-pocketed corporate sponsors.
So why spend that kind of money?
The answer appears to be bigger than simply putting on another concert.
Stonebwoy has repeatedly positioned BHIM Fest as a platform for showcasing Ghanaian music to the world. With Nigerian artistes increasingly filling major international venues, the dancehall star appears determined to make sure Ghana is not left watching from the sidelines.
Taking BHIM Fest to a venue with a capacity of about 12,500 at OVO Arena Wembley was therefore more than just another concert. It was a statement of ambition.
Of course, Blakk Rasta’s $250,000-plus figure remains an estimate and has not been independently verified through official financial records. So nobody should start auditing Stonebwoy’s bank account just yet.
Still, if the estimate is anywhere near accurate, Stonebwoy is taking a serious financial gamble to push Ghanaian music onto bigger global stages.
And sometimes, making history comes with a bill that looks like it belongs to somebody else.
